Newark Medallions Hip Hop Spirit Making Exercise
Discussing how we contribute and visually create objects that display our pride and connection to home.
Artist: Noelle Lorraine Williams
Discussion and activity on how traditional crafts like bead work and sewing are used in a contemporary context to explore ideas of justice.
Students recreated medallions based on Hip Hop African medallions that artists and community members wore to show pride in their African heritage and to replace the message that gold chains (the popular accessory) exhibited.
Instead of Africa we recreated them with an outline of Newark,
Goal: To generate discussion of how we use clothing to display our beliefs and hopes about the world.
